Free Learning Opportunities

Advocate provides a host of free learning opportunities including instructor-led courses, computer based training for just-in-time learning, and on-the-job development. Offerings include clinical competency development, PC and computer skills and management development courses. An intensive orientation curriculum is also provided for all new leaders to align them with organizational strategy and expectations.

Assessment and Feedback

Additional development offerings are available for associates interested in gaining individualized and targeted feedback on their customer service and/or leadership behaviors. An assessment center and online 360 degree feedback system aid associates in identifying career goals, developing learning plans and preparing for their future at Advocate.

STEPs – Success Through Excellence in Practice

This four-level, direct caregiver staff RN clinical ladder (Clinician I – Clinician IV) is designed to recognize, reward, and promote excellence in nursing practice at all levels of development – novice through expert.

STEPs is part of our commitment to ensure that our nurses are the absolute best. The goal is to help you advance your expertise and your career. Where do you fit in? Take the first step and keep reading.

New Graduates
If you’re a new graduate you’ll be initially placed in the Nurse Clinician I level. New grads are expected to meet all criteria at this level by the end of the 90-day probationary period.

Experienced New Hires
If you have nursing experience you will be evaluated according to the minimum criteria for each level of practice and placed within the program based on your current knowledge and expertise.

ew hires placed at Nurse Clinician III will complete and application packet after six months of employment to validate that they meet all criteria. If the new hire does not meet the criteria, he/she will step down to the lower level with an appropriate reduction in salary. Nurses who step down are eligible to apply for promotion six months later.

Re-entry RNs
If you’re re-entering nursing, you will be evaluated for your level of practice during the orientation/probationary period and placed in the Nurse Clinician I category or allowed to apply for Nurse Clinician II. Our policy for one-year bridging applies to nurses who leave Advocate or reduce their status to PRN/Registry for less than one year. If the absence is less than one year, the nurse may re-enter at their previous Nurse Clinician level in the same clinical specialty.
